Following 2 months of growth, new car registrations in July were down by 5% in July. However Fully Electric Vehicles saw another growth this time at 9.1% Plug in Hybrids were also up hugely at 33%!
The petrol and diesel vehicles are expected to recover in the coming months and UK Summer holidays do contribute to the statistics but the argument is that people who want an electric option are also on holidays.
Some Battery electric vehicle customers will have held off to see the full details of the new electric car grant and what it means for consumers on purchase. Discounts up to £3,750 are expected and the terms around this are to be published shortly.
Manufacturer discounts together with the BEV discount leads to a great time to make a purchase and this will almost certainly lead to more increase in sales in the coming months.
Are you thinking of going electric? Why? We would love to know what the deciding factors are in making the switch. Is it distance these vehicles can now cover? Is it the fact there is now a lot more choice and its becoming easier to recharge quickly? Is it the cost and long term savings? Or is it another reason?
What does the above mean for the automotive industry long and short term? Will we see the decline of petrol and diesel production as per the targets the government have set. Is the new BEV grant going to help consumers buy electric earlier than perhaps planned and therefore cause a decline in other vehicle sales and production?
One thing that’s for sure, there is going to be a need for automotive jobs rising with new skillsets and even more work for mechanics who may face fixing petrol and diesel vehicles that are discontinued on a greater scale.
